Hands working together

Dance

Ballroom dancing is a great mental image to work with a child.

  • Both participants are listening to each other.
  • The bodies are linked together and react to each other.
  • They are moving with one shared intention.

Be ready to fail

As an exercise, I would like to ask you to try out some of your usual lessons with this thought in mind. You don`t have to succeed - in fact, I don`t expect you to. In the beginning, as long as you are strong enough, it is always easier to force than to lead a movement. Just hold on to the idea of a waltz, and do only as much as possible. Maybe put on some music.

Whenever a movement gets painful or the breathing gets restricted, the nervous system reacts by trying to avoid that movement. The idea of dancing makes sure we do not press on too far. The outcome might not be perfect - but the movements that were "danced" will be the one that are better remembered and easier reproduced on their own. Having both hands working together will make your hands on work more effective.

Try this for at least a few minutes a day, until it becomes natural.
